William Gallas Bio

Gallas has forged a reputation as one of the most commanding centre-backs in the League and has risen to captain Arsenal after a five-year spell at Chelsea.

Always concerned about being played out of position at left-back rather than in his preferred position in the centre, there was constant speculation about his future with foreign newspapers quoting him on his desire to move on.

He finally got his move away on transfer deadline day when swapping clubs with another wantaway star, Arsenal's Ashley Cole and signed for Arsenal.

Gallas was signed by Claudio Ranieri for the Stamford Bridge outfit in May 2001, snapped up from Marseille for £6.2million and dubbed as one of the brightest prospects France had to offer.

He made his debut in a 1-1 home draw against Newcastle United, and after a slow start he eventually blossomed into a fine player for Chelsea. Worth every penny, he played 41 games in his first season, netting two goals.

He grew in stature in the Chelsea line-up, earning his full France debut in a 5-0 demolition of Slovenia in a Euro 2004 qualifier in October 2002.

Gallas was in the France squad for Euro 2004, playing all four games as they were unexpectedly knocked out in the quarter-finals by Greece.

Despite spending much of the 2004/05 season speculating over his own future with Chelsea, Gallas continued to be a vital member of the first team. With Celestine Babayaro sold to Newcastle United and Wayne Bridge sidelined with an ankle injury, Gallas was forced to play at left-back for the second half of the season.

Much of the press speculation centred around his displeasure at being played out of position, ignoring the fact that Chelsea had no other player to slot in at left-back.

Gallas started 28 Premiership games - second only to John Terry among the club's central defenders - as Chelsea won the Premiership and the Carling Cup.

The centre-back was one of the first names on Jose Mourinho's teamsheet in 2005/06, as well as for France at the World Cup as they lost out to Italy on penalties in the final.

By this point Gallas had cemented his place as one of the best defenders in Europe, able to play anywhere across the back four and equally as adept in each position.

But Gallas continued to voice his displeasure at being unable to play in the centre of defence. And he finally earned a move away after making 225 Chelsea appearances and scoring 14 goals.

Most observers considered Arsenal to have got the better of the Cole-Gallas swap, and that certainly seemed to be the case with his early performances.

Gallas made his debut in a 1-1 draw at home to Middlesbrough and bagged his first goal in a 3-0 home victory over Sheffield United. He soon became a vital member of the first team alongside Kolo Toure, and was named captain for the 2007/08 season over Gilberto Silva.

Gallas scored against his old club, Chelsea, in December, to give the Gunners a 1-0 win; but his season was blemished by a tantrum thrown after the club drew 2-2 with Birmingham in February, conceding a penalty in the final minute.

Many critics blamed Gallas' outburst for Arsenal's failure to maintain their title challenge and questioned the Frenchman's suitability as captain.

Doubts continued over Gallas' temperament in the 2008-09 season when histrionics after Arsenal drew 4-4 with Tottenham were followed by and public criticism of his team-mates.

As a consequence Wenger dropped Gallas from the squad and stripped him of the armband, casting doubt over his future with the club.

Regardless of his colourful behaviour, the centre-back brings important experience to a youthful side and is one of the most important players in Wenger's side.

Cisse joined Sunderland on a season-long loan from Ligue 1 side Olympique Marseille in August 2008.

It marked a return to the Premier League after a two-year absence following his exit from Liverpool in 2006. Cisse, brought to Anfield under the reign of Gerard Houllier, claimed he was forced out of the club by new boss Rafa Benitez.

Noted for his pace, and his ever changing hair styles, Cisse made his name at AJ Auxerre after rising through the ranks to become the top scorer in the French Ligue 1 for the 2001/02 and 2003/04 seasons.

When Liverpool swooped with a £14million deal for the Frenchman he had scored 70 goals in 128 league games for Auxerre and had made his international debut for France, against Belgium in May 2002.

Following the sacking of Houllier at Liverpool Cisse struggled to win over Benitez despite scoring on his debut in a 1-1 draw with Tottenham Hotspur. His chances of making an impression were further hampered when he broke his leg against Blackburn Rovers in October 2004.

He returned in time to play a part as Liverpool won the Champions League final at the end of the 2004/05 season, beating AC Milan on penalties in Istanbul.

With a good pre-season under his belt much was expected of the player in 2005/06 and Cisse even bought a house that came with the peerage title of Lord of the Manor of Frodsham as he looked to settle down.

But the signing of Peter Crouch marginalised his position as the obvious choice as 'the big man up top'.

During the season he was used primarily as a right winger. With remarkable pace, Cisse was suited to the role, but unhappy at not being played as a striker.

Due, in part, to his lack of first team chances, Cisse agreed a loan move to Marseille at the end of the 2005/06 season, but broke his leg again while playing for France in a World Cup warm up match against China.

In December 2006 Cisse recovered from injury to make his debut for Marseille and scored his first goal in a 2-1 victory over AS Saint-Étienne.

Cisse made the move permament, costing Marseille €8million in 2007 and after a slow start to the season Cisse scored four goals in his final seven league appearances to finish the season with eight goals in 21 league appearances as Marseille finished second in Ligue 1 to guarantee a Champions League berth for 2007/08.

Drogba untuk piala FA

London - Di akhir pekan lalu Didier Drobga ditinggalkan Luiz Felipe Scolari dengan alasan yang "tak beralasan". Sambil menunggu isu sambungan tentang masa depannya, Drogba akan diberi Piala FA.

Menurut laporan sebuah media setempat Drogba akan dipanggil masuk skuad lagi oleh Scolari. Hari Sabtu (14/1/2009) mendatang Chelsea punya agenda di putaran keempat Piala FA melawan tim divisi bawah, Ipswich Town.

Penyerang Pantai Gading itu baru dua kali dimainkan di tahun ini. Aksi terakhirnya adalah ketika The Blues ditekuk Manchester United 0-3 pada 11 Januari.

Yang mengejutkan adalah Drogba tidak dilibatkan sama sekali dalam laga Chelsea melawan Stoke City hari Sabtu lalu. Jangankan menginjak lapangan, duduk di bangku cadangan pun tidak. Scolari memilih menghadirkan dua penyerang mudanya, Franco di Santo dan Miroslav Stoch, di bench.

Tentang ketiadaan Drogba saat ini Scolari enteng-entang saja menjelaskan alasannya. Ia berkata, siapapun yang masuk daftar tim semata-mata pilihannya. "Dan pilihan saya adalah memakai Di Santo dan Stoch," ujarnya ketika itu.

Alasan itu terdengar janggal buat tim besar yang sedang memerlukan pemain-pemain terbaiknya guna memperbaiki performa mereka di Liga Inggris akhir-akhirnya. Drogba mungkin sedang menurun permainannya, dan pernyataan-pernyataannya kerap mengundang spekulasi. Namun, Scolari tetap saja dinilai "aneh" dengan memilih Di Santo dan Stoch.

Manchester - Manchester City menghadapi dua hal buruk dalam satu hari ini. Pertama, Kaka menolak pinangan mereka. Kedua, pemain termahal mereka, Robinho, kabur dari markas latihan The Citizens. Beberapa jam lalu beberapa media di Inggris melaporkan bahwa Robinho menghilang dari training camp klubnya di Tenerife, Spanyol, pada hari Senin (19/1/2009) malam, setelah mengetahui bahwa Kaka dipastikan tidak bergabung ke City of Manchester Stadium. Laporan itu telah dibenarkan oleh pihak City, Selasa (20/1), sebagaimana dilansir Soccernet.com, namun tidak dijelaskan apa alasan pemain termahal Liga Inggris itu melakukan tindakan yang tidak profesional tersebut. Sebelumnya The Sun mengabarkan bahwa manajemen City sampai tidak bisa menghubungi Robinho semalaman, via telepon selulernya. Salah satu spekulasi menyebutkan, pemain berusia 24 tahun itu "minggat" ke Brasil. Robinho beberapa kali mengutarakan ketidakpuasannya pada City karena hingga kini tidak bisa merangsek ke papan atas klasemen Premier League. Padahal dia sudah tampil oke dengan torehan 12 golnya. Mood Robinho diyakini bertambah buruk karena City tak kunjung mendatangkan pemain-pemain kelas atas ke Eastlands, menyusul penolakan kaka.
